She started with dough.
She built a brand.
This is the story of Natalie Sabri, Founder and CEO of Dough Parlour, the preschool teacher who reimagined modelling dough and built one of Canada's most thoughtfully made sensory play brands.
It started on a preschool table.
Four children of her own. Fifteen years with other people's.
And a recipe.
A quiet realization that the thing in her hands could be the start of something much bigger.
Natalie Sabri spent more than fifteen years working with young children before she ever thought of herself as a founder. She was a preschool teacher. She ran her own childcare business. She was raising four children at home. Her world was small hands, big imaginations, and the daily, unglamorous work of being present for small people.
But she had always carried a creative, ambitious side quietly alongside the aprons and the lesson plans. A love of bringing ideas to life. A pull toward making things that would bring joy to someone else. For years, that pull lived in the background, in the batches of homemade dough she would mix for her classroom. It stayed in the background until the parents started asking.
They asked because their children played with it longer than anything else they had bought. They asked because it did not dry out. They asked because, somehow, this homemade dough from the preschool teacher was better than anything on the shelf. Natalie listened. And then she did what very few people in that position actually do: she took it seriously.

The Turning Point
A classroom recipe. A reimagined category.
Natalie did not want to make another plastic tub of dough. She wanted to reimagine the whole category. She saw what parents actually wanted but had never been given: a modelling dough that was beautiful, giftable, and thoughtfully designed. One that respected both the child playing with it and the home it would live in. One made for families who cared about aesthetics, sustainability, and health-conscious choices, and who had, until then, been forced to compromise.
What began as a homemade recipe quickly grew into something bigger than her classroom. Dough Parlour was born: a sensory play brand reaching families across North America, with a signature scented modelling dough manufactured in-house, using non-toxic, food-grade ingredients. Not an afterthought. Not a compromise. A product she would hand to her own children without hesitation.
Dough Parlour was featured nationally on CBC's Dragons' Den, bringing Natalie's story, her signature scented modelling dough, and her vision for a thoughtfully made Canadian sensory play brand into living rooms across the country, and in front of some of Canada's most prominent investors. Signature scented modelling dough and curated play experiences, made in-house in Canada, loved globally.
Two beliefs. One brand.
Purposeful Play
Play is not filler. It is how children learn to think, create, and belong to the world. Every Dough Parlour product is built to invite imagination, encourage exploration, and give children the kind of open-ended experience that becomes a memory.
Nothing to Compromise
Parents should not have to choose between a product that is beautiful and a product that is safe. Dough Parlour is both. Non-toxic, food-grade, giftable, and designed to live happily in a home that cares what it brings in.
"Ambition and motherhood are not opposites. They never were. One of the most important things I can show my children, and anyone watching, is that both can be true at the same time."
Her vision for Dough Parlour is a globally recognized children's play brand built without compromise, on quality, on sustainability, or on innovation. And underneath that, something quieter but just as deliberate: a demonstration of what a female-founded Canadian manufacturer can achieve when she refuses to be talked out of her own instincts.
Dough Parlour's signature scented modelling dough is manufactured in-house, using non-toxic, food-grade ingredients. The choice to keep production in-house was not the cheap one or the easy one. It was the one that let Natalie protect the formula, the quality, and the integrity of what families were trusting her with.
It is a quietly radical decision in a category used to outsourcing everything. And it is a decision that is paying off, batch after batch.
No traditional playbook. Just the willingness to learn.
Building a manufacturing business without a traditional business background has not been linear. Natalie has had to teach herself entirely new skill sets, in real time, while raising four children. Product development. Creative design. Manufacturing. Financing. Scaling operations. Each one its own steep curve. None of them optional.
There were no shortcuts and no handed-down playbook. There was just the daily willingness to figure out the next thing, and then the next, and then the next. The journey has strengthened her resilience, resourcefulness, and confidence in her ability to learn, adapt, and trust her instincts, and that may ultimately be the most valuable product the business has made.
A premium sensory play brand made with intention.
Dough Parlour is a premium sensory play brand celebrating imagination, creativity, and purposeful play. Its signature scented modelling dough is manufactured in-house using non-toxic, food-grade ingredients, offering parents a thoughtfully formulated alternative to conventional modelling dough.
Beyond the dough itself, the brand's curated play experiences are designed to invite children to explore, create, and sit with their own imagination for longer than a screen ever allows. The ethos is clear and unapologetic: play is serious work, and children deserve the best materials to do it with.

Raising children. Raising a legacy.
Beyond the business, Natalie's hopes are grounded in the same thing that started it. She wants to raise children who value perseverance and independence, children who understand that beautiful, meaningful things take time and that nobody is coming to do it for you.
And she hopes her story reaches other women, especially mothers, and says what every mother needs to hear at least once: ambition and motherhood can coexist. It is never too late to reinvent yourself. It is never too late to take the risk. It is never too late to build something that matters.
"I want my children to see what it looks like when a mother takes her own ideas seriously. That is the lesson. The business is just the proof."

Dough Parlour is proof that a mother, a classroom recipe, and the refusal to compromise can grow into a globally minded Canadian brand.
