Women-Centred
Equity
Equity isn't about giving women more. It's about removing what was never theirs to carry; the systemic gaps in access, pay, representation, and opportunity that hold half the world's talent back from its full potential.
Equality says "everyone gets the same."
Equity says "everyone gets what they need to stand at the same level."
The Equity Pillar
Fair Systems.
Fair Access.
Fair Outcomes.
Women don't fail because they lack talent. They fall behind because the systems they operate in weren't built for them. These often come in the shape of capital structures that favour men, networks that exclude women, pricing models that undervalue women-made goods, boardrooms that don't have a seat for them, and leadership pipelines that stop before they reach.
The Equity pillar doesn't ask women to work harder inside broken systems. It rebuilds the systems. Fair pricing for artisan goods. Fair access to capital. Fair representation in decision-making. Fair pathways to leadership. Not as an ideal, but as operational practice.
What Equity Looks Like at FOWES
Not a Policy.
A Practice.
Equity isn't a department or a statement on a website. It's embedded in how we operate - from how artisans are paid to who sits in decision-making rooms.
Fair Pricing & Pay
Artisan goods are priced based on true cost of craft, materials, time, and skill - not what a middleman decides. Women-led businesses are connected to markets that pay what the work is actually worth.
Equal Access to Capital
Women receive less than 3% of global venture capital. FOWES builds alternative capital pathways — micro-finance, trade credit, grant readiness, and investor networks - that don't penalise women for being women.
Representation in Leadership
Equity means women don't just participate - they lead. FOWES ensures women hold decision-making roles within programmes, cooperatives, partnerships, and governance structures.
Transparent Impact Data
What gets measured gets changed. FOWES tracks and publishes equity metrics across every programme - pay gaps, access rates, representation ratios, and outcome disparities — because transparency is accountability.
Market Equity
Women-made products compete in global markets at a structural disadvantage. FOWES provides the branding, trade infrastructure, and buyer access that levels the playing field without requiring women to discount their worth.
Knowledge Equity
Information is power - and it's unevenly distributed. FOWES ensures that business knowledge, financial literacy, legal frameworks, and digital skills reach women who've been excluded from traditional learning pipelines.
How We Practice It
Equity in Action,
Not Just in Words
Six non-negotiable commitments that govern how FOWES operates - internally and across every partnership.
Artisans Set the Price
Artisan communities participate in pricing decisions for their own goods. No intermediary sets a price without the maker's input and agreement. The value of craft is determined by those who create it.
Women Lead Programmes
Every FOWES programme has women in leadership and governance roles, not as figureheads, but as decision-makers who shape curriculum, allocate resources, and define success metrics.
Capital Without Conditions
Financial support through FOWES doesn't come with requirements that disproportionately burden women. There are no collateral demands that exclude asset-poor communities, no terms that assume a traditional business model.
Inclusive by Design
Programmes are designed around the realities of women's lives, childcare responsibilities, cultural contexts, language barriers, digital access gaps. Inclusion isn't an add-on. It's the starting point.
Outcome Parity
We don't just measure participation, we measure outcomes. If women are enrolling but not completing, accessing capital but not growing, the system is failing them and we redesign it.
Partner Accountability
Brands and organisations that partner with FOWES commit to equity standards through fair sourcing, fair representation, fair reporting. Partnership is a commitment to practice, not a badge to display.
Advocacy Through Action
We Don't Campaign.
We Build.
FOWES is not an advocacy organisation. We don't lobby governments or run campaigns. What we do is arguably harder, because we build the actual infrastructure that makes equity real. Every fair-priced product, every woman-led cooperative, every capital pathway that reaches a woman who would otherwise be excluded is advocacy in its most tangible form.
When a woman artisan sets her own price for the first time, that's equity in action. When a first-time founder accesses capital without a male guarantor, that's systemic change. When a cooperative of women negotiates directly with international buyers, that's the market correcting itself.
The most powerful form of advocacy is proof. Every woman who succeeds through FOWES is proof that the system can work differently.
We believe the most effective way to change unfair systems is to build fair ones alongside them, and let the results speak for themselves.
